A child may inherit their father’s eyes and their mother’s smile—but Thalassemia should never become the inheritance that defines their future. This belief inspired the formation of the Serum Thalassemia Prevention Federation on May 28, 2006. What began as a determined effort by compassionate individuals from different sections of society has grown into a sustained movement for awareness, early detection, counselling and care.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce healthy haemoglobin. While treatment can help patients live healthier lives, prevention through timely carrier screening, genetic counselling and informed decision-making remains one of our most powerful tools.
Over the years, we have reached students, families and communities through awareness programmes, screening camps and counselling sessions. Our initiatives include:
Behind every sample is a person. Behind every report is a family. And behind every screening is the possibility of protecting a future generation.
As we complete two decades of service, our commitment remains stronger than ever. We envision a society where no child is born with a preventable form of Thalassemia, every carrier knows their status, and every affected person receives care with dignity and compassion.
This journey belongs to everyone—patients, families, doctors, counsellors, volunteers, donors, educational institutions and well-wishers. Together, through awareness today, we can build a healthier and Thalassemia-free tomorrow.

The journey of SERUM Group and Sanjib Acharya is synonymous. Sanjib Acharya is one of the pioneers of the referral labs concept in India. A referral lab is ‘the lab of the labs where special tests are to be conducted’. He is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
The journey of Sanjib Acharya began with a small laboratory as an ELISA Reader in a 10 by 10 space in the year of January 2000. He has masterfully transformed it from a single pathology centre into a premier healthcare provider with state-of-the-art laboratories in various parts of India.
In addition to that, one of the leading Bengali entrepreneurs and social activists, Sanjib Acharya, started another venture, i.e., his NGO, Serum Thalassemia Prevention Federation (STPF), in 2005 with the mission to prevent and eradicate Thalassemia and AIDS from society and to offer essential, life-saving medications to affected Thalassemic patients completely free. Now it has become a famous Institution. Under his able leadership, STPF has introduced a specialised school, “VARSHA”, in 2022. Varsha has already achieved distinguished school status.
In 2018, Sanjib Acharya realised his dream of building a state-of-the-art old age home, founding Jibanpur Vanaprastha Village Trust in Barrackpore. As President-Trustee, he passionately supports elderly care through this senior-friendly facility—offering 24/7 medical services, attendants, and an ambulance—and also operates a charitable medical unit for local villagers.
Sanjib Acharya has ventured into the hospitality & FMCG sector with two premium hotels in the Himalayan Hills, Rosedell Inn in Gangtok & Rishop. He has opened a series of Pakriti Ice Cream Parlours across Kolkata, a confectionery & beverage chain. His absolute love for animals has led him to open a comprehensive animal diagnostics and surgical services unit, ‘SERUM Pet Treat’.
His latest innovation is towards fuel-efficient and eco-living, so in 2025, Sanjib Acharya founded SERUM Electrogreen Pvt. Ltd., which offers sustainable energy solutions, harnessing the power of the sun for eco-friendly homes and businesses by manufacturing green batteries & solar panels.
Other than his business & entrepreneurial acumen, he had a profound cultural side often hidden by his busy schedule. He writes not only medical articles for various newspapers, magazines & journals but also relevant social dramas for thalassemia awareness, which he directs as well, and pens down a lot of skits. He is a good orator, an excellent reciter, and a group theatre worker par excellence who even acted in a famous theatre group in his heyday. He is a man of many façades. Sanjib Acharya is a true multifaceted leader. He has also been serving as the editor of Sumadhyama – a monthly social tabloid newspaper and SERUM Times – a scientific & medical journal, for over a decade.
Over the decades, he has carved out a niche and is the recipient of many national and international awards.
